What is UBL (and what is the difference with UBL.BE)?

UBL (Universal Business Language) is the standard format for electronically exchanging business documents. UBL provides a common framework and syntax for representing various types of business documents, such as purchase orders, invoices, shipping notifications, and more. UBL is based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and was specifically designed for invoicing. Note that an e-invoice is not a PDF file.

A UBL invoice allows invoice data to be transferred from accounting software A to accounting software B, enabling direct import without manual entry. This facilitates communication between the sender and receiver through UBL invoices, without requiring prior acquaintance.

It is also possible to send e-invoices to other businesses via the European PEPPOL network. UBL invoices sent through PEPPOL use a specific PEPPOL format on top of UBL, known as PEPPOL BIS3.

UBL.BE is a Belgian standard built on the PEPPOL BIS3 format, which simplifies the processing of Belgium-specific rules. UBL.BE is also a non-profit organization dedicated to the development, maintenance, and promotion of the UBL.BE format. Its focus is on the use and secure transport of e-invoices in a compatible manner, specifically supporting the use of Peppol as a network and the use of the BIS3 and UBL.BE standards.

Electronic Invoicing with UBL, PEPPOL, or UBL.BE

Want to Start Electronic Invoicing with UBL?

No problem—our system supports the UBL format. When sending your B2B invoices via PEPPOL, the software will automatically use the most suitable format.

If you download the electronic invoice to keep for yourself or to process in your accounting system, it will be generated in the UBL.BE format by default.
